Proxies and Reverse Proxies Explanation – 2021 Edition

Hey everyone, today we will be talking about what are the differences between a Proxy server and a Reverse Proxy server.

The first one is aimed for usage by a end-host1 node like a PC or Server, the proxy can be used to hide the IP address of the end-host behind it meaning the “Internet” on the dia as well as caching content such as images and html content of a webpage, this makes it faster to load webpages and a more smooth experience. On a server side example, it could be used to cache updates for the servers, making it faster to upgrade if you have a faster LAN, in case the proxy is in the LAN of course.

A reverse proxy is more aimed to server content delivery like websites. The proxy can deal with the SSL certificates taking the load of encryption and decryption from the server, and redirections to the correct servers in the case you have more than one website in the same network. This proxy does not cache anything, it’s also important not to confuse it as a load balancer which is something different thought most tools can do the same.
